With only a few resources at their disposal, Janine and her husband, Peter, started an environmental education programme, a vulture project, a raptor rehabilitation project, a reptile captive breeding programme and a scientific research base.
They worked hard to educate farmers and communities in the Blouberg area on the advantages of preserving wildlife, especially the Vulture. These birds were being killed by farmers who viewed them as a threat to their livestock and sangomas killed vultures to used their brains for muti. These bad practices were essentially stopped in the Blouberg area by the Snyman's efforts. Now people appreciate how the vulture is an important element of the ecosystem.
Janine has written numerous articles for scholarly journals like Vulture News on topics like:
- Rüppell's Griffon Aerial Display
- Rüppell's Griffon Breeding in the Blouberg
- Mass Vulture Poisoning in the Blouberg
From 1986 - 1989, Janine managed the financing and building of some 300 upmarket housing units in Seshego, Polokwane (Pietersburg). As such she is uniquely positioned to assist the SABP in its quest to provide good housing to South Africa's masses.
On the nature-front, Janine's goal for South Africa is the protection and conservation of the environment, ecosystems, biodiversity and endangered species. This she intends achieving through environmental education programmes and the implementation and maintenance of community-based conservation projects that benefit these communities, together with the collating of information gathered through associated research.
